Structural performance of reinforced concrete beams with self-healing cover zone

In the current study, experiments were carried out to investigate structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with a self-healing cover zone. The zone consists 1.5-cm-thick layer bacteria-embedded strain hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) for combination crack width control and healing. aim is bring together two emerging technologies (i.e., strain-hardening) that show great potential realizing highly efficient structures. RC beam without was also prepared as specimen comparison purposes. experimental program includes loading failure in four-point bending configuration sawing segments pattern analysis Results selfhealing exhibited 45-60% improvement capacity. patterns hybrid largely modified. While reference formed only few major cracks, around 40 fine cracks constant moment region an average smaller than 0.2 mm even at maximum load. By having improved cracking behavior enhanced capacity, it expected will possess extended service life expense minimal additional cost.
